Things in a Conversation

An experimental project that investigates our perception of artifacts through speculative design.

About

Conversing is probably not an activity one would expect between objects — it breaks with certain preconceived expectations, both in how the objects might be understood and in how the conversation between them is to be interpreted. What are they? And what are they talking about?

Speculative design project. Part of MA class at HDK – Academy of Art and Design.

Things in a Conversation approaches these questions through fabricated artifacts designed with intentional ambiguity. Aesthetic and functional ‘cracks’ leave space for the viewer to define the relationship between the objects — making them questions materialized rather than answers resolved. The project draws on the emergence of connected objects and the largely undefined space of what it might mean for things to communicate.

Role

Design and manufacturing of artifacts with CNC and wood work craft tools. Design and production of spiral book.
